Sevenoaks Town Council is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a £10,000 grant from The National Lottery Community Fund. This funding will contribute directly to youth worker salaries at House in the Basement, the Town Council’s youth café located beneath The Stag on London Road.

Since opening in 2012, House in the Basement has been a much-valued, youth-friendly venue offering a safe, welcoming space for 11–17-year-olds from all backgrounds.

House in the Basement offers affordable food, shared activities and group events, creating opportunities for friendships and peer support networks to develop. Facilities include a pool table, computers and a comfortable chill-out area.

Trained staff and volunteers work alongside young people to foster trust and positive relationships. The café plays a vital role in early intervention as youth workers provide support with mental wellbeing, job and college applications, schoolwork, volunteering opportunities, as well as education around alcohol, drugs and smoking. The café’s supportive environment helps young people build confidence, self-esteem, and healthier futures. SEN-focused sessions every Tuesday ensure that young people with additional needs are included and encouraged to thrive.

The Sevenoaks Youth Council also plays an active role in shaping what happens at House in the Basement, helping to decide on events and activities to engage young residents. Past events have included sports tournaments, cultural celebrations, free annual seaside trips, fundraising initiatives and educational workshops. These activities promote social cohesion, strengthen community relationships and showcase the talents and achievements of local young people.

This December, House in the Basement will host a free Christmas Party for young people on 19 December at 5pm, courtesy of Perfect Cuisine. To attend, please email manager@houseinthebasement.co.uk.
