Bumper crop on The Vine
Published: 20 October 2025
There’s a reason why the historic cricket pitch at the heart of Sevenoaks is called The Vine. It was said to be a vineyard for the Archbishop of Canterbury back in the mists of time, before the cricketers arrived.
But there’s been a real vine just near the fishpond in Vine Gardens for years. This year it produced a bumper crop of black grapes. They are edible - I’ve tried them - but probably better for winemaking. If there’s anyone out there who could make a bottle or two you might like to get there before the birds finish them off.
A more recent arrival in Vine Gardens is a kiwi bush. It’s produced very small fruit this year - much too small to eat. In a year with more rain, and given a chance to grow, it might do better in future.
You’ll find rosemary, thyme, sage and other herbs in Vine Gardens too. Very useful for adding an extra bit of local flavour to Sunday lunch!
Thanks to all the volunteers and Town Council staff who have helped make The Vine such a wonderful place - weeding the borders and tending the plants. We will find out next week how the In Bloom judges rated us in the National Final.
If you love the Vine, you can vote for it now in the Green Flag People’s Choice Awards. Voting is open until 5pm on 31st October. To vote for the Vine, visit the Green Flag Award website here.
