Sevenoaks Town Clerk, Linda Larter, voted Vice President of International Institute of Municipal Clerks

Linda Larter MMC MBE FSLCC, Town Clerk/Chief Executive at Sevenoaks Town Council, has been elected Vice President of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC), an historic milestone for the profession. Linda is the first non-American ever to be elected to this role in the Institute’s 80-year history.

The IIMC is the world’s largest professional body for municipal clerks, representing thousands of local government professionals across North America and internationally.

Linda’s election to this role underlines the growing international influence of the UK clerk profession. It also reflects the important role of UK town and parish clerks as the closest local government tier to the community.

Linda has been a clerk for nearly 40 years, serving communities of all sizes from 250 to 70,000. Linda was elected as a Board Director to IIMC in 2023. She is currently a Director of the Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC) and a former President of the organisation. She is also Chair of the UK SLCC Educational Trust. In 2000, she was awarded an MBE for a community project.

Speaking about her appointment, Linda said, “I am truly honoured to have had support from fellow clerks to be elected to Vice President for IIMC, I really look forward to working with colleagues worldwide and will do my utmost to help them in their profession.”

Linda’s election is a significant moment for Sevenoaks, placing the Town Council on the international stage and highlighting the strength of its leadership and service to the community.

Leader of Sevenoaks Town Council, Cllr Claire Shea, commented, “With her years as Director and Former President of the Society of Local Council Clerks under her belt, and her many other accomplishments, it came as little surprise to me that Linda was elected to this position.

“Clerk colleagues have said that her achievement is ‘genuinely historic’ and a moment of great pride for the sector. They have described her as a true advocate and champion for clerks across the world.

“Linda, thank you for all that you do for this council, and for local council clerks across the UK and now, across the world.”

Linda will be formally sworn in as Vice President at the 80th Annual IIMC Conference on 21 May in Reno, Nevada.
